As part of the T-Rex Encounter, take on the challenge of our Dinosaur Hunt and be in with a chance of winning a family trip to the Natural History Museum’s Dino Snores. To enter, simply pick up your Dinosaur Hunt card from one of the T-Rex Explorers, then set off on an adventure to find our eye-catching cardboard dinosaur models, which will be hidden in ten store windows around the town centre. Along the way, you’ll learn everything you could possibly wish to know about every type of dinosaur!
Post your completed card in the white letter box behind Patisserie Valerie to be entered into the prize draw. Prize includes entry to the Dino Snores for a family of four: explore a torch-lit trail, get creative with a dinosaur t-shirt-making workshop, dig deeper with an educational science show presented by a Museum scientist and enjoy breakfast in the morning.
The story of our dinosaur models
You’ll be excited to learn that our dinosaur models have been handmade completely from cardboard, by talented cardboard craftsman, Mark O'Brien. Mark uses cardboard boxes creatively to make a variety of different objects; he has a long list of things he’d like to make, and dinosaurs have always been at the top of that list!
Each dinosaur has taken Mark around 2-3 days to create, and he used plastic dinosaurs for research and as a source of inspiration. He started by making internal structures for each one and then built layers of torn and peeled cardboard, adding detail as the final step.
They were challenging to make, as Mark told us it is sometimes difficult to make living creatures and organic shapes with cardboard, but he has loved the project! He’s enjoyed using a new process - folding and tearing the cardboard to make it fit the shapes and forms of these giant characters - giving each one its own individual character.
