Spring into Colour

Published 10 April 2025

This May half-term we have teamed-up with Little Muddy Boots to help you learn more about, and create your own colourful garden or window box displays, using bright fruit and vegetables and fabulous blooms.

From Saturday, 4 May to Sunday, 1 June 2025 (excluding Monday, 26 May 2025), between the hours of 11.00 am and 4.00 pm, you can visit our pop-up garden space in Union Square, where the team from Little Muddy Boots will be on hand to show how easy it is to bring colour into your garden space. On Bank Holiday Monday, May 26 2025, although the pop-up garden will be closed, face painters will be in Union Square with flower designs to delight young visitors.

There will also be bookable workshops each day where you can get crafty and decorate your own pot, sow some seeds and taste some delicious home-grown fruit.

Strawberries

Nothing quite beats the taste of a home-grown strawberry and they are so easy to grow. They love a sunny spot and will happily grow in pots, hanging baskets, tins, raised beds and borders.

Be sure to use netting as protection if you want to keep all the strawberries for yourself as birds love this delicious berry just as much as we do.

Carrots

Carrots don’t need a lot of space to grow but they do need somewhere deep and sandy. Choose big pots with plenty of depth and mix your compost with sand to give the carrots space to grow.

Did you know… Carrots are known for being orange but did you know that they were originally white and now come in all sorts of colours including purple, red and yellow!

Nasturtium

Nasturtium are known for their brightly coloured petals and abundance of flowers. You can sow nasturtium seeds from March to May directly outside in the places you want them to grow. Just sprinkle the seeds carefully and cover them with soil.

Did you know… The petals are edible and can be sprinkled over salads. You can eat the leaves too and make them into a delicious pesto sauce or dip.

Rainbow Chard

You don’t need buckets of space to grow chard and can grow it in a border, raised bed or large pot. Simply sprinkle the seed where you want it to grow and cover with soil before adding a sprinkling of water.

Did you know… Chard is available to grow in a variety of colours from red to white and even a mix known as ‘bright lights’ which are colourful leafy stems bursting from the ground, a little like fireworks.

Forget-me-nots

Forget-me-nots are small, delicate flowers known for their bright blue petals and are associated with love, remembrance, and nostalgia. They are easy to grow from seed and can be sown direct in May or June. They thrive in a sunny or partially

Did you know… The name "forget-me-not" comes from a legend about a knight who, while picking flowers for his lady, fell into a river and drowned, throwing the flowers to her as a final message, asking her to never forget him.
